Summer Camp
Webelos scouts are encouraged to participate in a week-long summer camp experience at an official Cub Scout summer camp. This program typically costs slightly over $125 per scout and provides a great overview for the scouts of the Webelos program. It is especially effective to complete summer camp during the summer that the scouts are entering into Webelos (between 3rd and 4th grade). Many campers return home with several activity badges to their credit and experience with a wide range of scouting skills, including swimming, fire building, camp cooking, drama, forestry, handicrafts, boating, archery, and shooting (BB-guns). Summer camp also provides a great preview for Boy Scouts.
Required gear for summer camp includes a sleeping bag, poncho, uniform, flashlights, swimming suit, appropriate footwear, clothing, and other miscellaneous supplies. Tents, cots, and food are provided by the camp. Medicine is collected and dispensed by one of the adults in the company. Physicals are required for camp. There are typically several planning meetings before camp to orient campers and adults to the experience.
At least one adult is required for every three scouts at summer camp plus the overall camp leader. Pack 434 pays the registration fees for adult leaders. Adults may also share the week, so one person can participate in the camp on Sunday-Wednesday and a second individual can fill that position on Wednesday through Saturday. Summer camp is great fun for adult leaders. The food is not bad. The adults have fun teaching and learning throughout the week.
Younger boys are also encouraged to participate in the National Capital Area Council Cub Scout Day Camp, which is organized and run by the Olde Mill District and takes place at nearby Lake Needwood. The camp is one week in duration and the hours are from 9 to 4 each day. One adult volunteer is required for every five registered scouts from the pack. Boys in grade 1 through Webelos are eligible to attend day camp.
Sign up for both summer camp and day camp is generally conducted in April of each year.
